What is my IP address?

This is the IP address websites see when you visit them, with the location and provider that can be derived from it.

Your public IP address

…

What websites see

Every website you visit sees this IP address and can estimate your city, provider and connection type from it.

IPv4 or IPv6?

If you see an address with colons, you are connected over IPv6. Most networks now support both.

Public vs private IP address

Public IPPrivate IP
Visible toEvery website and service you useOnly devices in your network
Assigned byYour internet providerYour router (DHCP)
Examples81.2.69.160, 2a02:…192.168.0.10, 10.0.0.5

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4 addresses (like 203.0.113.7) are running out, so providers increasingly give out IPv6 addresses (like 2001:db8::7). If your address above contains colons, your connection uses IPv6. Many devices have both and use IPv6 when the website supports it.

For developers

Look up any IP address with the ipbase API: location, ISP, ASN, time zone and security flags in one request.

Frequently asked questions

What is my IP address?

The address at the top of this page is your public IP address: the address your internet provider assigned to your connection and that every website you visit sees. Your devices also have private addresses (like 192.168.x.x) inside your home network, which are not visible on the internet.

Can someone find my home address from my IP?

No. An IP address reveals the approximate city or region and your internet provider, not your street address. Only your provider can link an IP address to a subscriber, and only shares this with authorities under legal orders.

Why is the location wrong?

IP geolocation shows where your provider routes your traffic, which can be a nearby city. Mobile networks, VPNs and corporate networks often appear in a different city or country.

How do I hide my IP address?

Use a VPN, a proxy, Tor or a privacy relay such as iCloud Private Relay. Websites then see the address of that service instead of yours, and tools like the VPN checker can usually tell.
